Students’ Awareness to Save Batagur borneoensis Increased After Campaign

We have implemented the campaign to increasing students’ awareness of Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis), critically endangered species and listed as one of twenty five freshwater turtles in endangered at global level. More than of six hundred students in Sub-district Seruway, Aceh Tamiang, Indonesia, have been educated. Students’ awareness increased after campaign that indicated by, for example, that 94,44 percent of respondents answered correctly the status Painted Terrapin as critically endangered. Compared to pre-campaign survey on July only 57,7 percent of respondents knew the status. Read more…

Preparation of Field Survey

We will carry out first of comprehensive field survey to estimating the number of wild population of Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis) in District of Aceh Tamiang. Recently, we are still in organizing any preparations needed before to the field. Equipments (traps, gears, medical kits), obtain permit, transportation, communication and logistics, recruiting and training local guide are must be prepared very well. Socialization in Junior High School

Saturday (10/3) is the last day of our pilot project of campaign to junior and high school students in Sub-district of Seruway. This in-door event is a continuation of our education program that started since October of 2011. Sixty students was attended our socialization program in SMP Negeri 1 (Junior High School No 1) Sub-district of Seruway on that day. The facilitators consist of Joko Guntoro, Yusriono, Devianta – all are the members of Satucita – and a teacher of Biology from that junior high school. Unknown Tagged Hawksbill Sea Turtle Caught Incidentally

Unknown tagged Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) was caught incidentally by fishermen in Seruway Sub-district, District of Aceh Tamiang, Indonesia, on 23 of January 2012. This turtle was caught by fishing net at nearby of Pusong Cium, a beach where Painted Terrapin always nesting every year. Read more…

Campaign Has Been Reached More Than of Five Hundred Students

Our campaign activity to save a critically endangered freshwater turtle, Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis) has reached more than of five hundreds students in two Junior High Schools and one Senior High School. Their age are between 13 until 17 years old. The campaign that had been started since August 2011 is targeting will reach about six hundreds students until end of November 2011. After that, we will conducting a post-campaign survey to investigating the awareness changes made by this campaign to the students. We visit to that schools in every week to conduct a class room meeting and discussion with the students. Read more…

Establishing Headstarting Facility for Batagur borneoensis

The headstarting facility for Painted Terrapin has been established and still improved. In the area of 800 square meters, the facility is functioned as ex-situ conservation place to support in-situ conservation of Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis) in Aceh Tamiang District. Batagur borneoensis is critically endangered species and listed as one of twenty five global freshwater turtle in endangered 2011 (Turtle Conservation Coalition). The species is distributed in Sumatera and Kalimantan, but has been facing threats to extinction in the wild due to the consumption the their eggs, the trade as pet and medicine, habitat loss (deforestation and land conversion).
