Painted Terrapins Conservation Initiative
Painted Terrapin Conservation Initiative (PTFTCI) is initiative launched by Lembaga Satucita since October of 2009. By launching PTCI, we aim to conserve the terrapins and freshwater turtle in Indonesia. Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneonsis) – one of critically endangered turtle found in Indonesia – choosen as an “icon” due to that this species often avoided of conservation attention. So, by PTCI we aim to save all of freshwater turtle lives in Indonesia from extinction. Nevertheless, Painted terrapin (Batagur borneonsis) will be our priority due to lack of public attention.
Recently, PTCI are focussing their efforts in Aceh Tamiang Regency, Indonesia, to save Painted Terrapin. To know further more information about what we fight for, please watch (or download) our short documentary movie. You can watch and download it at this link :
PTCI consist of activities :
1. Beach and Nesting Patrol, to save the eggs from natural predation and human. In this activity, incubation also carried out by natural or semi natural method. We also encounting and mark an ID nesting females and hatchlings.
2. Village Observation and Patrol. Our local informan will encounting, mark and ID, release every Painted terrapin (or other freshwater turtles) found in the villages or near area. Local informan also playing key role to purchase the eggs which collected/harvested by local villagers in nesting season.
3. Research to supporting the conservation efforts.
4. Protection of habitat.
5. Campaign (education) to local people and student to increasing their knowledge about freshwater turtle and the importance of this unique species.
6. Community Empowerment (Planned) through trying to developing ecotourism and “Freshwater Turtle Education Center” for anyone interested to learn about environment and freshwater turtle.
